Building Energy Codes and Standards

The Building Energy Codes and Standards (BECS) Committee represents the interests of the gas industry in the national codes and standards process of model codes groups, technical standards organizations and federal agencies, to promote the continued use and marketability of natural gas downstream of the meter. Codes and standards have a significant impact on gas equipment installation costs, competition between gas and other energy sources and systems, and the introduction of new technologically advanced equipment. Reasonable and technically sound codes and standards are essential in promoting the safe and efficient utilization of gas equipment and accessories, and in paving the way for new gas technology that might otherwise meet with code-official resistance.

Typical Committee Member

The committee is made up of directors and managers from AGA member companies responsible for local code compliance, and liaison representatives from ally trade groups.

Benefits Of Committee Membership

Opportunity to ease local code compliance difficulties by having the BECS Committee sponsor code changes to modify the technical coverage in the model codes. Increased awareness of codes and standards issues through industry discussion that help foster member company involvement on the local level.

Products and Services

The BECS Committee develops code change submittals for submittal to the regional model code groups and provides supportive testimony during the code change process. BECS also serves as a technical advisory group for research in codes and standards issues sponsored by the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and develops "fact sheets" and other informational packages on common code question/concerns. AGA staff provides presentations to educate local building official and other trade allies on codes and standard issues upon member request.

Interaction with other AGA Committees/Outside Organizations

The BECS Committee primarily interacts with the Strategic Marketing Committee. BECS is active at the public code hearings and annual meetings of the model code groups, ASHRAE winter and annual meetings, GTI project group meetings, and other pertinent technical organizations.

Meetings

Three, two and a half day meetings per year.
