Legal
The Legal Committee members serve as legal advisors to the association, the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. The committee also helps provide recommendations on public policy litigation, including helping to prevent and/or overturn harmful government regulations and laws.
Typical Committee Member Committee members come from a cross section of member companies and are generally the chief legal officers of the companies.
Benefits of Committee Membership
Participation on the Legal Committee can help to shape government policy, increase members’ success in advocacy, keep them abreast of legal developments and sharpen the companies’ attorneys’ skills. The committee helps to formulate legal policies for the Association; provides legal advice to the AGA Board of Directors; guidance to AGA on litigation (federal and state); and support to members in potentially precedent-setting cases.
Products and Services
The committee oversees legal products and services to the membership. These include: litigation alerts, forums and workshops, Antitrust Compliance Programs, Issues SOS, Expert Witness SOS, assistance to members in potentially precedent-setting litigation, and analyses and legal summaries. The committee also sponsors the annual AGA Legal Forum, the preeminent legal programs for attorneys in the natural gas industry. It is an intensive two-day seminar that gives participants the opportunity for in-depth discussion of gas industry issues. Continuing legal education credit for attorneys is provided in this and other legal programs.
Interaction with other AGA Committees/Outside Organizations
This committee works closely with other AGA committees, including the AGA Board of Directors, the Government Relations Policy Committee (in advocacy matters), and Engineering & Operating Section. This committee also helps to provide legal advice to other AGA committees as the committees develop new programs to decrease costs while increasing safety and reliability.
MeetingsCommittee meetings are held twice a year (one of the meetings is typically held in conjunction with the annual Legal Forum in July).
