Safety and Occupational Health

  1. To collect, develop, and disseminate technical data and information with specific reference.
  2. To promote safety and health programs in order to protect employees and the general public.
  3. To sponsor programs and papers in a cooperative effort in related technical symposia, the publication of committee reports and papers and the development of articles for publication.
  4. To monitor and review federal legislation, codes, and associated rule-making activities which affect the industry and are within the committee’s scope of activities, and to advise the Managing Committee of items of concern; and
  5. To provide liaison with appropriate industry groups, professional associations, research organizations and other committees for the exchange of information and technical assistance relative to the concerned areas of interest.

Typical Committee Member

Officers, directors, managers and senior engineers of employee safety departments.

Members determine and disseminate information that will promote prevention of employee injuries and job-related illnesses.

Products and Services

This committee produces technical notes, guides, publications and topical workshops which include: “A Guide to Controlling Natural Gas in Emergencies,” “Suggested Safe Practices for Gas Distribution Workers,” and the annual Natural Gas Utility & Transmission Industry Occupational Injury & Illness Statistics,  Contractor Safety Guidelines, and Voluntary Guideline for EH&S Management Systems.  This committee also presents formal safety roundtable discussion forums and sessions at the annual Operations Conference.

Interaction with other AGA Committees/Outside Organizations

The committee works closely with AGA’s Operating Section Regulatory Response Committee Occupational Safety & Health, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the Gas Technology Institute (GTI).

Meetings

The committee meets twice a year in the spring and fall. It also may meet periodically by conference call. An additional in-person meeting may be held, if required and approved by the Managing Committee.
