Taxation

To serve the gas industry by keeping it informed of tax issues which impact the industry; to develop, where possible, uniform industry positions with respect to pending or proposed tax matters (e.g., legislation, regulations, rulings, etc.); and to communicate industry positions (in coordination with other committees) to the appropriate governmental or regulatory body (e.g., Congress, IRS, Treasury, etc.).  Also to improve the tax knowledge and proficiency of committee members and others in the industry.

Typical Committee Member

Members of the committee are generally vice presidents, managers/directors, financial officers and controllers.

Benefits of Committee Membership

Committee members stay current on tax issues by hearing outside experts and by discussing current issues with their colleagues.  Members undergoing audit discuss positions taken by the IRS in specific situations and obtain the collective judgment of the group concerning possible areas of advocacy where the IRS has taken an adverse position.  Members support AGA's advocacy agenda.

Interaction with other AGA Committees/Outside Organizations

This committee maintains liaison with the Congress, IRS, Treasury Department, major accounting firms and other accounting committees that encounter tax issues.  The committee also maintains liaison with their counterpart committees in other trade organizations:  EEI, INGAA and USTA.

Meetings

The committee meets for two and one-half days in June each year.  The committee hosts a Tax Advocacy Issues Workshop in November each year.
