Transmission Measurement

  1. To develop, collect, assess and disseminate technical data and information with specific reference   to:

a)Procedures, practices, and guidelines for the safe and effective installation, operation, testing and maintenance of metering and associated equipment including volume and pressure control equipment used in production, gathering, and transmission of natural and substitute gas from the source to the outlet of a transmission line gate station,

b)Scientific principles, applications and usage of all types of volumetric, mass and energy metering devices associated with the equipment specified above, and

c)Equations and formulas, and their practical implementation for usage in calculating accurate volumetric, mass and energy quantities.
  2. To sponsor programs, papers and presentations within the industry at related technical symposiums, and provide liaison with and encourage liaison from appropriate national and international industry groups, professional associations and other committees for the exchange of information and technical assistance relative to areas of interest to the committee.
  3. To investigate new technologies related to areas of interest to the committee.
  4. To identify and foster research ideas related to committee activities, including the definition of problems and the collection of data pertinent for support of research proposals.
  5. To monitor and review Federal regulatory and legislative issues, which are within the scope of the committee activities, and advise the Managing Committee items of common concern to both LDC and pipeline members of AGA and whether they are being addressed by any other organizations.
  6. To develop and publish reports, manuals and engineering technical notes for reference by the members and the industry.
  7. Suggest methods, systems, procedures and techniques to collect, audit and transfer measurement data

Typical Committee Member

Directors, managers, superintendents of measurement.

Benefits of Committee Membership

Members are involved in the development of natural gas industry measurement standards and disseminate information that will promote efficient installation, operation, testing and maintenance of transmission gas measurement devices. Members also learn how other companies have dealt effectively with problems similar to their own.

Products and Services

This committee has several projects at hand that include – a new report on calculation of speed of sound in natural gas; technical notes on coriolis meter and orifice meter error assessment, measurement audit and meter station design; and revisions to gas measurement manuals and reports on ultrasonic meters, turbine meters and sonic nozzle prover. They have already revised a report on natural gas contract measurement and quality clauses and odorization manual. In collaboration with API, they have revised AGA report No. 3, Part 2, on orifice metering and have issued a technical note on use of high differential pressure in orifice metering. Revision to other parts of AGA Report No. 3 is under active consideration.

Interaction with other AGA Committees/Outside Organizations

This committee is one of 13 committees that report to the Operating Section Managing Committee. The committee also works closely with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Committee on Gas Measurement and the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and is involved with the Gas Processors Association (GPA), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), International Standards Organization (ISO) and American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) on natural gas measurement activities.

Meetings

One meeting is held in conjunction with the Operating Section Fall Committee meetings.  A second meeting in January/February and a third meeting in conjunction with the May Operations Conference.
