Stephen Ewing Receives AGA’s Distinguished Service Award

Washington, D.C. – The American Gas Association (AGA) today presented the 2012 Distinguished Service Award to Stephen E. Ewing, former vice chairman of DTE, group president of the gas division of DTE Energy, and president and CEO of Michigan Consolidated Gas Company (MichCon). He is currently serving on the boards of CMS Energy, Consumers Energy and the National Fuel Gas Company. Mr. Ewing received this honor during the AGA annual executive conference in Boston, MA.

“It is with sincere gratitude, appreciation and honor that we present this award to Steve for his service and commitment to AGA and the entire energy sector,” said Lawrence Borgard, AGA board chairman. “Throughout his career, Steve has been a leader and champion of the natural gas industry, and I am so pleased to recognize his effort and dedication with this award."
Mr. Ewing began his industry career at MichCon in 1971 where he held a series of executive positions and was serving as president and CEO at the time that DTE Energy acquired MCN Energy Group in 2001. In 1992, Mr. Ewing began his participation in AGA where he has served as a member of the Policy Committee for 14 years, helped create and served as chairman of the Board Supply Task Force and participated on the Executive and Security, Integrity and Reliability committees. In 1999, Mr. Ewing joined the AGA board of directors and served continuously through his chairmanship and retirement from DTE Energy in 2006. In addition, Mr. Ewing has served as a member of the National Petroleum Council and chairman to both the Midwest Gas Association and the Natural Gas Vehicle Coalition.

Mr. Ewing is currently very involved with the Skillman Foundation, which helps children and families in Southeast Michigan; Oakwood Healthcare, which deals with rising healthcare costs; the United Way; the Chamber of Commerce; and the Automobile Club of Michigan. Mr. Ewing earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University, a Master’s Degree in business administration from Michigan State University and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University.

The American Gas Association, founded in 1918, represents more than 200 local energy companies that deliver clean natural gas throughout the United States. There are more than 71 million residential, commercial and industrial natural gas customers in the U.S., of which 94 percent — over 68 million customers — receive their gas from AGA members. Today, natural gas meets almost one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.
