 American Gas Association Recognizes 17 Member Companies for Safety Achievements   


Phoenix, Ariz. — The American Gas Association (AGA), representing the nation’s gas utilities, today recognized 17 of its member companies for achieving outstanding records for employee safety in 2007. The awards were presented at AGS’s 2008 Operations Conference.

“The safety of our employees and our customers is a top priority for natural gas utilities,” said AGA President and CEO Dave Parker. “The companies we honor today demonstrate that commitment every day in their practices and procedures.”

Fourteen AGA member companies received Safety Achievement Awards for having the lowest employee disability injury and illness rate among companies of their size and type for the previous year. To receive the award, the companies also must have an employee disability injury rate lower than the average rate in the industry. Companies recognized today included:

Local Distribution Companies
Very Large: Public Service Electric & Gas Company (Newark, N.J.)
Large: DTE Energy – MichCon (Detroit, Mich.)
ComGas (Sao Paulo, Brazil)
Medium: PECO Energy (Philadelphia, Pa.)
Entergy New Orleans (New Orleans, La.)
Small: Entergy Gulf States, Inc. (Baton Rouge, La.)

Combination Utilities
Very Large: Pacific Gas & Electric Company (San Francisco, Calif.)
Large: E.ON U.S. (Louisville, Ky.)
Medium: Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power Company (Cheyenne, Wyo.)
Small: Gainesville Regional Utilities (Gainesville, Fla.)

Transmission Companies
Very Large: Spectra Energy Gas Transmission (Houston, Texas)
Large: Tennessee Gas Pipeline (Houston, Texas)
Medium: Southern Natural Gas (Birmingham, Ala.)
Small: Eastern Shore Natural Gas (Dover, Del.)

As part of this year’s awards program, AGA also launched a new recognition program for member companies with the lowest number of reportable vehicle accidents per million miles driven. The first Vehicle Safety Awards were presented to the following companies.

The American Gas Association, founded in 1918, represents more than 200 local energy companies that deliver clean natural gas throughout the United States. There are more than 71 million residential, commercial and industrial natural gas customers in the U.S., of which 94 percent — over 68 million customers — receive their gas from AGA members. Today, natural gas meets almost one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.
