AGA Commends U.S. Chamber of Commerce for “America’s Energy Future” Event

Washington, DC – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its Institute for 21st Century Energy today held an event titled America’s Energy Future, during which Tom Donohue, president and CEO of the Chamber, and General James L. Jones, USMC (Ret), president and CEO of the Institute for 21st Century Energy, addressed current energy issues facing our nation and outlined potential solutions. David N. Parker, the American Gas Association’s (AGA) president and CEO, made the following statement in light of the event:

“The American Gas Association commends the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its Institute for 21st Century Energy for hosting this event, which highlights the Institute’s blueprint for meeting America’s energy challenges. Our nation is in the midst of an energy crisis and in order to make our future more secure, we need strong leadership and bold ideas. Today, the Institute offered both of these.

“Today’s event showcased long-term solutions that can serve as a guide for lawmakers as they look to answer America’s call for comprehensive energy legislation. Because natural gas is the most environmentally friendly fuel available, we believe it will play a critical role in any sustainable, long-term energy solution. This will require increasing access to natural gas supplies, which is imperative not just to lower costs to consumers, but to improve our national security.  On this point, the Institute strongly agrees with us. We look forward to working side by side with the Institute to promote policies that will result in greater energy security, lower costs, and a cleaner environment.”

There are more than 71 million residential, commercial and industrial natural gas customers in the U.S., of which 94 percent — over 68 million customers — receive their gas from AGA members. Today, natural gas meets almost one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.
