                                         Other Officers, Board of Directors Elected

Washington, D.C. – Thomas E. Skains, chairman, president and CEO of Piedmont Natural Gas Co., Inc. of Charlotte, North Carolina, yesterday was elected to serve as chairman of the American Gas Association’s (AGA) board of directors for 2009.  Mr. Skains’ appointment took place during AGA’s annual corporate meeting in Washington, D.C.

“Tom has been a tireless advocate for the natural gas industry for nearly 30 years,” said David N. Parker, AGA president and CEO. “He has spent his career championing natural gas and utilities as an integral part of a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for America.”

“Natural gas is uniquely positioned to play a vital role in our nation’s energy future.  It is clean, efficient and abundant,” Mr. Skains said. “Working with AGA staff and member company leaders, I hope to drive home the message that natural gas is the responsible choice for meeting America’s energy and environmental goals.”

Headquartered in Charlotte, NC, Piedmont Natural Gas Co. serves 1 million residential, commercial and industrial utility customers in North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, including 62,000 customers served by municipalities that are wholesale customers. Its subsidiaries are invested in joint venture, energy-related businesses, including unregulated retail natural gas marketing, interstate natural gas storage and intrastate natural gas transportation.

Mr. Skains was elected chairman of the Piedmont Board of Directors and CEO in 2003 and president and COO in 2002. Since joining the company in April 1995, Mr. Skains has served as senior vice president, Marketing and Supply Services, and he directed Piedmont's commercial natural gas activities.

Prior to joining Piedmont, Mr. Skains served as senior vice president of Transportation and Customer Services at Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation and as a corporate attorney in Houston, Texas. He has a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Sam Houston State University and a Doctorate of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Houston Law School.

AGA’s other officers for 2009 will be:  First Vice Chairman Robert C. Skaggs, Jr., president and CEO of NiSource, Inc. (Merrillville, Ind.); Second Vice Chairman John W.
