AGA Applauds Strategic Partnership with Army Reserve to Boost Energy Jobs

Washington, DC – The American Gas Association (AGA) today commended the Center for Energy Workforce Development (CEWD) and the U.S. Army Reserve for joining together to increase jobs in the energy sector and secure long-term careers for Reservists and returning servicemen and women.

“AGA applauds CEWD’s efforts to boost the energy sector by partnering with the Army Reserve, which produces some of America’s most skilled workers— making it a natural fit for our industry,” said Laura Sheehan, AGA’s vice president of communications.

CEWD, of which AGA is a founding member, was formed to develop solutions to ensure a continued qualified workforce in the utility industry.  By working with the Reserve, CEWD will have the opportunity to recruit adept, proven workers to fill critical job vacancies in the energy field.

“Energy issues are on the forefront of our national agenda – and workforce demands will only increase in the coming years,” said Sheehan.  “This partnership not only will provide jobs in a downturned economy, but will also populate a critical industry with the skilled workers we need to maintain the reliable and safe delivery of energy to our customers.”

Impending retirements among workers in the energy industry, such as engineers and technicians, will account for many of the vacancies. Additionally, there will be job opportunities due to expected infrastructure improvements and new energy efficiency programs.

The two organizations solidified the collaboration by signing a memorandum of understanding last week.  For more information about careers in energy, visit http://www.getintoenergy.com/.

There are more than 71 million residential, commercial and industrial natural gas customers in the U.S., of which 94 percent — over 68 million customers — receive their gas from AGA members. Today, natural gas meets almost one-fourth of the United States' energy needs.
