[We] urge you to release the remaining contingency resources as soon as possible to address the needs of families and seniors who are experiencing a record heat wave this summer...
Washington, DC — As record high temperatures continue to plague the country, the American Gas Association (AGA) in conjunction with the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) and National Fuel Funds Network (NFFN), will host a press conference with members of Congress on Wednesday, July 28. Participants will call for full funding of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and the immediate release of the remaining 2010 LIHEAP contingency resources to help vulnerable Americans who cannot afford to cool their homes during these blazing summer months.
Members of Congress recently circulated a letter urging the administration to release the contingency funds to help pay for cooling bills across the country:
“[We] urge you to release the remaining contingency resources as soon as possible to address the needs of families and seniors who are experiencing a record heat wave this summer. With energy bills remaining high and economic conditions challenging for many Americans, LIHEAP has never been more vital in protecting millions of low-income families, senior citizens and disabled individuals from extreme weather conditions.”
This press conference will be held in conjunction with Summer LIHEAP Action Day, which is designed to call attention to the millions of Americans throughout the country who rely on LIHEAP to meet their basic heating and cooling needs.
