Washington, D.C. – The American Gas Association (AGA) praised a recent announcement by the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) stating that 13 new cutting-edge research projects will receive a total of $30 million to find new ways of harnessing America’s abundant natural gas supplies for cars and trucks and expand the use of natural gas as a vehicle fuel. ARPA-E is part of the U.S. Department of Energy. The new program, titled Methane Opportunities for Vehicular Energy (MOVE), aims to engineer light-weight, affordable natural gas tanks for vehicles and develop natural gas compressors that can efficiently fuel a natural gas vehicle at home.
“The new ARPA-E MOVE program is focused on the right challenges at the right time. Their leadership can motivate the kind of game-changing innovations that will help us displace foreign oil with clean, domestic natural gas,” said AGA President and CEO, Dave McCurdy.
“The research areas outlined in this program address exactly what consumers need to give them confidence that natural gas vehicles can be the all-in-one car that most American families require. More energy storage means freedom to travel longer distances and home refueling means freedom from the gasoline station. This will enable Americans to benefit from our nation’s abundance of clean natural gas and cut the costs to fuel their cars and trucks by more than half.”
