Washington, D.C. — The American Gas Association (AGA), today released the following statement regarding the announcement that the documentary “Gasland” has been nominated for an Oscar:
AGA is extremely disappointed to see that despite its distortion of the facts, "Gasland" has been named as a 2011 documentary Oscar nominee. Hydraulic fracturing is a time-tested drilling process that has been in use for more than 50 years in hundreds of thousands of wells. Rather than include this information, however, "Gasland," ignores the reality of this technology to create a fanciful story designed to generate fear and distrust.
Per the very definition of the documentary category from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the emphasis of a documentary film must be ‘on fact and not fiction,’ and there is no doubt "Gasland" has missed the mark.
