About Natural Gas

Natural Gas is An Essential Part of America's Energy Mix: Natural gas supplies nearly one-fourth of all of the energy used in the United States.
Nationwide Delivery System
Natural gas is delivered to customers through a safe, sound, 2.4-million mile underground pipeline system that includes:
2.1 million miles of local utility distribution pipes; and
300,000 miles of transmission lines.

Where Does Natural Gas Come From?
LIHEAP Resources

The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is a federal block grant program that provides financial assistance to low and fixed-income individuals for fuel and utility bills, as well as low-cost weatherization and energy-related home repairs. The LIHEAP statute provides for two types of program funding regular funds and emergency contingency funds. Regular funds are allotted to states according to a formula prescribed in the statute. Contingency funds are allotted and released by the president and the secretary of Health and Human Services.
Pipeline Safety

The natural gas industry operates an extensive system of 2.4 million miles of distribution and transmission pipelines that stretch across the country to provide service to more than 177 million Americans. The design, construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of all operating pipelines are subject to state and federal regulations and requirements. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, pipelines are the safest, most environmentally-friendly and most efficient and reliable mode of transporting natural gas.
What Is Natural Gas?

Natural gas is a combustible, gaseous mixture of simple hydrocarbon compounds, usually found in deep underground reservoirs formed by porous rock. Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed almost entirely of methane, but does contain small amounts of other gases, including ethane, propane, butane and pentane. Methane is composed of a molecule of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms.
