Utilities Work With Congress to Continue Safe Delivery of Natural Gas

Washington, D.C. - Safety is the top priority for America s natural gas utilities. The American Gas Association (AGA) was honored to participate in the House Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials hearing today to review of the Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act of 2011. Ron Bradley, Vice President, Gas Operations at PECO, An Exelon Company, testified on behalf of the gas utility industry and thanked the committee members for all the work they do to help ensure that America has the safest, most reliable pipeline system in the world.

The United States Department of Transportation says that our domestic abundance of clean natural gas is carried to homes and businesses via the safest energy delivery system in the nation, said Dave McCurdy, President and CEO of AGA. We will continue to work with Congress, federal and local regulators, safety advocates and our customers to help ensure the continued safe and reliable delivery of this clean energy source to all Americans.

The Pipeline Safety, Regulatory Certainty, and Job Creation Act was passed by the House in December 2011 with unanimous bipartisan support. Congress is required to reauthorize the legislation every six years.

In his testimony, Bradley said that safety is a source of pride and a matter of corporate policy for every natural gas utility and highlighted AGA s Commitment to Enhancing Safety which details actions that are being addressed by AGA or individual operators that go above and beyond current regulation to help ensure the safe and reliable operation of the nation s 2.4 million miles of pipelines.

Bradley also noted AGA s 14 technical committees and operations managing committee that focus on a wide range of operations and safety issues. AGA s annual Operations Conference is taking place right now Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With more than 1000 attendees, it is the industry s premier gathering of natural gas utility and transmission company operations management from across North America and the world for the sharing of technical knowledge, ideas and best practices to promote the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of natural gas. This year s conference will feature more than 100 technical presentations.
