Background
Most states, municipalities and government agencies adopt one of three available model gas installation codes to help judge the acceptability of gas installations, including gas piping, combustion air, venting systems and appliance location and installation. These model gas codes are developed by national consensus code-writing organizations. The three model codes currently available for adoption include:
| Model Fuel Gas Code | Consensus Code Development Organization |
| International Fuel Gas Code | International Code Council, American Gas Association |
| National Fuel Gas Code | American Gas Association, National Fire Protection Association |
| Uniform Mechanical/ Plumbing Code | International Association of Plumbing & Mechanical Officials, National Fire Protection Association |
In addition, nationally recognized standards for energy conservation, indoor ventilation and appliances are developed by consensus standard-writing organizations. These standards can affect gas installations and are used by the building design community or adopted by governmental entities. Three of the influential standard-writing organizations and their standards include the following:
| Standard | Consensus Standard Development Organization |
| ASHRAE 90.1, Commercial Building Energy Conservation ASHRAE 62.1, Building Ventilation | The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers
|
| International Energy Conservation Code | International Code Council |
| ANSI Z21/83, Appliance Standards | CSA International |
AGA Viewpoint
Technically sound and nationally consistent model codes and standards help ensure that gas installations are a safe and viable option for consumers. AGAʼs Building Energy Codes and Standards (BECS) Committee continuously monitors the model building codes and standards, submitting proposals and challenges to the various code and standard developing groups. These efforts ensure that the codes and standards remain technically sound and consistent across the nation.
