The House last night passed legislation to provide an additional $1.0 billion for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program in FY 2006, bringing the total FY06 appropriation to $3.2 billion. The Senate has already approved this measure and the next step is signature by the President. This is the highest level of funding for LIHEAP in its 20 year history, with nearly $2.5 billion in base funding for the program and $700 million allocated to emergency funding that will be available throughout the year for cooling and heating.
