Gas Technology Institute – Fuel Switching Study

Gas Technology Institute – Fuel Switching Study

The American Gas Association (AGA) and the American Public Gas Association (APGA) commissioned the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) to conduct a study to evaluate the potential impact of fuel switching if new minimum efficiency standards for natural gas furnaces were to require condensing equipment in the replacement and new construction markets.

The objective of the research summarized in this report and accompanying spreadsheet was to develop and publish information on fuel switching behavior related to residential heating and water heating systems in new construction and replacement markets at national, regional, and state levels. The technical information is intended for use in evaluating the impact of fuel switching on the technical feasibility and economic justification for increasing federal minimum efficiency requirements from non-condensing furnace efficiency levels to condensing furnace efficiency levels.
