AGA Aldyl A White Paper

Report June 29, 2017

You are asked to review and ballot a new AGA document, “Information about Aldyl® “A” Piping.” The document was created to provide a single source document for known information about Aldyl A piping. This document was prepared by a special AGA task group. Balloting will close on Friday, August 11, 2017.

Executive Summary:
The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) has identified some older polyethylene (PE) materials as being susceptible to brittle-like cracking. Certain vintages of Aldyl® “A” (Aldyl A) pipe are included in PHMSA’s Advisory Bulletin, ADB-02-07. This report provides a history of DuPont's Aldyl A natural gas pipe and summarizes DuPont and Federal Agency communications about the pipe in an effort to increase awareness of natural gas Aldyl A piping systems.

While Aldyl A was being produced information about various resin names and changes were not widely distributed. It has only been in recent years that this information has become available. This document pulls together currently available information to assist operators with understanding Aldyl A piping.
