Natural Gas in a Smart Energy Future

Natural gas is a foundation fuel for a smart, clean, safe and reliable energy system. It serves as an efficient source of comfort in homes and productivity for businesses. Natural gas has also become a vital fuel source for electric generation – serving peak demand and also balancing the integration of renewable energy.

How Does the Natural Gas Delivery System Work?

How Does the Natural Gas Delivery System Work?

Gas flowing from higher to lower pressure is the fundamental principle of the natural gas delivery system.  The amount of pressure in a pipeline is measured in pounds per square inch.

From the well, the natural gas goes into "gathering" lines, which are like branches on a tree, getting larger as they get closer to the central collection point.

Natural Gas Delivery System Materials

Natural Gas Delivery System Materials

Through the decades, a variety of materials have been used to make natural gas pipelines.  The selection of materials varies with the date the pipeline was placed in service, the diameter and pressurization requirements of the pipeline, and the characteristics of the local terrain.  Listed below are the most common pipeline materials.

Natural Gas Industry Safety Programs

Natural Gas Industry Safety Programs

Because safety is the natural gas industry's top priority, the industry spends more than $6 billion each year to maintain the system's excellent safety record.  Serious accidents on the natural gas delivery system are rare, but the natural gas industry is dedicated to making them obsolete.

AGA Marginal Pricing Methodology: Furnace Efficiency Rule

When calculating savings in energy cost from using natural gas appliances and considering conservation and efficiency efforts, some analysts simply multiply the average cost per unit of energy times the energy savings.  This method of determination is inappropriate because only a part of the natural gas energy cost should be considered in this calculation. The marginal costs should be considered when calculating the impact of conservation efforts, which tend to happen, at the margin of user consumption.

Fact Sheet

Natural Gas Storage

Underground storage of natural gas is an integral component of the nation’s energy system, and our nation’s significant storage capacity enables utilities to reliably offer clean natural gas to consumers throughout the year in a cost-efficient manner and without interruption.

2018 National Fuel Gas Code
