Pipeline Safety

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) sets federal safety standards for pipelines. In addition, most states add additional safety standards that go above and beyond DOT’s regulations for intrastate pipelines. There are hundreds of state-specific pipeline safety regulations currently in place. PHMSA also partners with state pipeline safety agencies on inspections and enforcement of intrastate pipelines.

Setting a High Bar

AGA supported S. 2276, the SAFE PIPES Act, which was signed into law in 2016 after passing the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate by unanimous consent. AGA continuously tracks rulemakings at federal agencies to advocate for the smart and safe use of natural gas in America’s homes and businesses.
