AGA Applauds NEPA Reform in Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023
Washington, D.C. – The American Gas Association commends the inclusion of key provisions on energy permitting reform in the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023.
“There has long been bipartisan recognition that our current energy permitting system is broken. The inclusion of some introductory NEPA reform in the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 is a key step towards rationalizing energy permitting,” said Karen Harbert, AGA president and CEO. “Safe, affordable and reliable energy is the cornerstone of American prosperity. Unnecessarily extended permitting processes hurt customers and the economy by denying access to the critical energy Americans expect and want at low prices. This legislation will start the process towards true permitting reform, but there is still work to be done. A growing population and economy rely on a flexible energy system that can adapt to meet demands, and this is a down-payment on an energy permitting system that works for all Americans.”
“The inclusion of provisions intended to allow the completion of the Mountain Valley Pipeline are another important piece of this legislation,” continued Harbert. “This approval will eliminate a massive bottleneck that has made it more difficult to supply homes across the south with natural gas, allowing millions of customers access to the energy they deserve and want.
We are pleased to see the bipartisan effort to get this legislation through Congress and look forward to working with our partners on both sides of the aisle to ensure America’s continued access to affordable, reliable energy.”
