AGA Commends Bipartisan Passage of the Save Our Gas Stoves Act

Washington, D.C. – The American Gas Association commends the House of Representatives for its passage of H.R. 1640, the Save Our Gas Stoves Act, sponsored by Representative Debbie Lesko (R-AZ). This important legislation amends the Energy Policy and Conservation Act to prevent the U.S. Department of Energy from effective bans on entire classes of appliance under the guise of energy conservation standards. Additionally, AGA applauds the bipartisan support in passing H.R. 277, the REINS Act, and returning oversight of agency regulations to Congress rather than allowing power to sit with unelected bureaucrats.

“I am encouraged by the strong showing of bipartisan support for this commonsense legislation,” said Karen Harbert, AGA president and CEO. “Customers deserve the right to choose the appliances that are right for them and their families.

“Customers want natural gas—in fact, one new residential customer signs up for natural gas service every minute, and approximately 80 businesses begin new natural gas service every day. Affordable natural gas saves households more than $1,000 every year and has driven down emissions from the natural gas distribution system by 69% since 1990. Ensuring access for the 187 million Americans who use it daily benefits families and the economy and is an important part of helping our nation achieve its energy and environmental goals. Customers and policymakers have spoken by passing energy choice legislation that preserves that access in 24 states, we should be listening to them,” Harbert concluded.

The bill will now move to the U.S. Senate, where AGA will continue to advocate to the fullest for its passage into law.
