AGA’s research shows that incorporating natural gas technologies, infrastructure and strategies is an essential part of achieving environmental goals while protecting energy affordability for American families and businesses, a goal that this industry has continued to advance. Emissions from the natural gas distribution system have declined nearly 70% since 1990 and today’s local distribution systems release as little as 0.1% of the natural gas they deliver.
Efficiency: An Important Piece of the Solution
Efficiency is one of the clearest examples of how innovation can advance sustainability. The American Gas Foundation’s recent study on high-efficiency direct-use natural gas technologies found that modern appliances can reduce residential emissions by more than 20% while delivering meaningful cost savings to consumers. Looking ahead, continued improvements in efficient gas equipment are expected to reduce home greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 40% by 2040.
Homes that use natural gas for space and water heating, cooking and clothes drying produce carbon dioxide emissions that are 22% lower than those attributable to comparable all-electric homes. Meanwhile, carbon emissions from the average home using natural gas continue to decline by roughly 1.1% each year as technologies become more efficient.
