One Meter at a Time
Peoples Natural Gas is rolling out a wide‑scale meter replacement initiative across its Pennsylvania and Kentucky service territory, installing the new Intelis 250 and 425 natural gas meter to enhance safety and provide peace of mind for homeowners.
As part of its ongoing commitment to safety and reliability, PNG is upgrading customer meters at no additional cost, with the goal of modernizing its infrastructure while adding innovative safety features.
Manufactured by Itron, the Intelis models use ultrasonic sensing technology to continuously monitor natural gas flow and temperature. If it detects anomalies such as extreme temperatures, the meter can automatically shut off natural gas flow, adding an important layer of safety for customers.
This safety‑first design aligns with broader industry trends toward smarter, more responsive infrastructure, helping utilities and customers reduce risk and improve emergency responsiveness.
PNG has prioritized a seamless customer experience throughout the meter replacement process. Technicians schedule appointments with customers, enter homes wearing company identification, and replace the meter in approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Natural gas service is temporarily shut off during installation but restored immediately afterward, with all appliances relit and tested before the technician leaves.
To minimize disruption, PNG is integrating meter upgrades into routine service visits whenever possible. Customers do not experience service interruptions beyond the short installation window, and no changes are made to bills because of receiving a new meter.
To educate its customers about the new meter program, PNG has taken a proactive approach to consumer outreach. The company provides detailed project information and frequently asked questions on its website and shares video content that explains how the new meters work and what residents can expect during installation.
Additionally, PNG provides specialized guidance for plumbers and home service professionals to ensure they understand how to interact safely with the new meters and avoid unintentionally triggering the safety shut‑off features during maintenance.
All meters currently in operation meet safety standards, but according to the utility, PNG’s meter modernization project reflects a forward‑looking effort to adopt the latest technology and improve the overall safety and resiliency of its distribution system. With more than 100,000 Intelis meters already installed, the program continues to expand throughout PNG’s service territory.
