Natural Gas Utilities Continue to Grow and Fuel American Homes

There’s a clear takeaway from AGA’s New Energy Insights: natural gas utilities aren’t just holding steady; they’re continuing to grow in meaningful ways. Not only that, but more homes continue to choose natural gas daily.

Today, more than 73.7 million U.S. households rely on natural gas, highlighting just how essential it remains for everyday needs. And that number is still climbing. From 2023 and 2024 alone, nearly 587,000 new residential customers were added — proof that natural gas continues to be a go-to choice for families across the country.

This isn’t a short-term trend, either. Over the past decade, the industry has added roughly 6.5 million households, reflecting steady, reliable growth year after year. It’s the kind of consistency that points to real, ongoing demand, especially as more communities grow and new homes are built.

Texas, California, and North Carolina are leading the way, having seen especially strong gains driven by population growth and expanding housing markets. These trends show how closely natural gas demand is tied to where people are moving and building their lives.

At the same time, policies in many states are helping preserve access to natural gas. As of this year, 27 states have adopted “fuel choice” laws that ensure natural gas remains an option in new construction. While these policies matter, the bigger picture is clear: people continue to choose natural gas because it works for them.

As the energy landscape evolves, natural gas utilities are keeping pace; serving more homes, supporting growing communities and remaining a dependable part of everyday life.
