AGA Comments on EPA Proposed ENERGY STAR NextGen Certification for Buildings

In comments filed on March 2, 2023, AGA encouraged the EPA to consider natural gas infrastructure’s capacity to meet peak energy demand and net-zero emissions goals when developing the ENERGY STAR NextGen Certification criteria. AGA emphasized the importance of using source energy rather than site energy to account for and compare the energy efficiencies of buildings, and AGA requested that renewable and hydrogen-blended natural gas be explicitly recognized as renewable fuels. EPA should offer more details about the certification program and consider the natural gas systems’ importance for meeting environmental goals and providing resilient, reliable, and affordable energy delivery.
